Fraxel Laser Recovery: Day By Day

Have you wished there was an easy way to address all your skin concerns? Acne scars, wrinkles, dullness, fine lines and sun damage could all be simply peeled away? Fraxel laser treatment does just that. While it might seem intimidating to be under the beam of a laser, this skin resurfacing treatment has become a trusted solution for making minor skin imperfections disappear.

What is a Fraxel Laser?

Fraxel laser treatment resurfaces your skin. It can help improve the look of acne scars, signs of aging, sunspots, loose skin, fine lines, and more. Fraxel laser treatments can also be used on your hands, chest, and neck. If you are considering Fraxel laser treatment, here is what to know about Fraxel laser recovery.

Fraxel laser treatment is a skin rejuvenation method. It uses a laser to remove damaged areas of your skin, revealing  smoother, more even toned skin. The treatment also stimulates collagen production, which can result in firmer skin.

Treatment with a Fraxel laser differs from other laser resurfacing treatments in that it:
  • Targets microscopic treatment zones. Other lasers treat the entire surface of your skin. Fraxel lasers can be used to precisely target different areas.
  • Can be tailored to your needs. Fraxel laser treatments can be adjusted and targeted to your specific problem area and goals, allowing for better control over the intensity and depth of treatment.
  • Has less down time. Compared to other laser treatment options, Fraxel laser treatment provides a quicker recovery and less downtime. It also stimulates collagen production, which can help speed healing.

What to Expect During a Fraxel Laser Treatment

Fraxel laser treatment is minimally invasive. The day of your treatment, your laser specialist will apply a numbing cream to the area being treated. Then, they will mark the areas to be treated and give you protective eyewear. The Fraxel laser device is passed over areas marked for treatment, using precise beams of light to stimulate collagen production and your skin’s natural healing abilities.

Once your treatment is complete, your skin may look and feel like it has been sunburned. You might experience redness, swelling and irritation. Your provider may give you a cooling gel or moisturizer to help your skin heal and alleviate discomfort.

Recovering From Fraxel Laser

It is very important to follow your provider’s instructions for recovery from your Fraxel laser treatment. Below is what typically happens during Fraxel laser healing. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to contact your provider.

Right After Treatment

Your skin will look red, swollen and feel irritated. To reduce discomfort and speed healing, use any gels, ointments, or moisturizers your provider gives you. Staying well hydrated will help the healing process and reduce swelling. You can also apply a cold compress to relieve pain and swelling, and try not to touch or rub treated areas.

Day One

The day after your Fraxel laser treatment, you should notice a reduction in redness and irritation. You may still have some swelling, but you may also notice dryness or a feeling of tightness as your skin starts to heal.

Day Two

On day two after your Fraxel laser treatment, most of the swelling and redness may be gone and you may notice the treated areas look darker. Use a light moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated as it heals and to relieve pain. Keep drinking water to stay hydrated, too.

Day Three

You will likely start to notice itching and peeling similar to a healing sunburn on day three of Fraxel laser healing. Keep applying moisturizer and drinking water to help the healing process. Although it might be tempting to exfoliate to quickly remove the peeling skin, do not do this. This can slow healing.

Day Four

Most of the skin peeling should have stopped by day four. You may notice some peeling as well as mild itching. It is important to not scratch or pick at your healing skin. This can cause infection or scarring.

Day Five

On the fifth day of your Fraxel laser treatment recovery, you may notice your skin is beginning to look closer to normal. Though you may still see a few imperfections, like redness or sensitivity, your skin will likely feel much more comfortable now. You may also notice smoother, younger looking skin. You will also be able to tell if you like the results of your treatment by day five. If you decide to have an additional skin rejuvenation session, wait two to four weeks from your first appointment. Even though your skin is looking and feeling better, do not forget to continue to keep applying sunscreen and moisturizer.

Tips for Healing Your Skin Effectively

Though we have provided what to expect as you move through your Fraxel recovery timeline, it is important to keep in mind everyone’s skin is different and may not heal exactly according to the above timeline.

As you are waiting for your skin to heal, there are several things you can do to stay comfortable and help your skin recover.

Moisturize: Keep moisturizing your skin. Choose a light moisturizer as heavy ones can slow the healing process.

Avoid makeup and exfoliating: Makeup and exfoliants can also slow the healing process.

Protect your skin from the sun: Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen if you will be outdoors. Try to avoid spending long periods of sun exposure.
