Thread Lift

A thread lift is a non-surgical facelift technique that uses dissolvable sutures to lift and rejuvenate facial skin temporarily. People choose thread lifts because they offer subtle enhancements without the need for major surgery.

This procedure is often called a “lunchtime lift” because, unlike a surgical facelift that involves incisions and lifting of the muscles, a thread lift offers low-risk enhancement with minimal downtime. Thread lifts appeal to those not ready for a full facelift, or who want prolonged results between surgical procedures. Areas like the eyebrows, jowls, and neck can be gently repositioned into a more flattering alignment. Results typically last 1-2 years as the body naturally absorbs the sutures. While outcomes are more subtle than a surgical facelift, a thread lift is an effective option for reviving a tired or aging appearance.

Treatment Areas

Many patients turn to thread lifts as a temporary solution to lift mild sagging skin on the face, neck and body. The delicate sutures used in this procedure can target multiple areas at once for a mini facelift effect and enhance the following treatment areas:

What to Expect

Thread lifts help subtly lift and tighten the skin on the face and neck with fine, undetectable sutures. This non-surgical procedure repositions sagging or loose skin to provide a more youthful-looking contour and promote collagen production over time.

During the Procedure

Patients can expect a relatively quick and comfortable procedure when having a thread lift. During a thread lift procedure, a numbing agent is injected into the  treatment areas before fine, temporary sutures are woven under the skin to pull droopy tissues up and back for a refreshed, youthful contour. Some pressure or tightness may be felt as the threads pull the skin upward. Once the sutures are in place, the visible thread ends are trimmed.

Recovery

Some temporary swelling, redness or bruising around injection sites can occur but generally subsides in a few days. Most patients feel well enough to return to regular activities immediately after a thread lift. While some results are visible right away, the threads work gradually over the first month to lift the skin naturally for a rejuvenated appearance. Patients only need conservative pain medication and can resume normal activities within a day or two.

After the Procedure

The final results emerge gradually over 2-3 months as collagen stimulation occurs. Most patients see the complete rejuvenated shape at around 3 months. Thread lift results typically last 1-2 years before a touch-up may be needed. As the sutures dissolve, collagen production is stimulated to provide longer-lasting effects.

Is a Thread Lift Right for Me?

A thread lift is a good minimally-invasive alternative to a full face lift for those seeking natural-looking enhancement. If you have any of the following conditions, you may not be a good candidate for a thread lift:

  • Those with very loose, inelastic skin or deep wrinkles
  • People with underlying health conditions that impair healing such as diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or circulation issues.
  • Individuals prone to keloid scarring.
  • Patients who want dramatic changes - a surgical facelift is better for significant rejuvenation.
  • Patients with very thin skin make thread placement technically more difficult.
  • Those susceptible to irritation from sutures may feel discomfort as threads dissolve.
  • People wanting permanent results.

FAQs

Are thread lifts safe?
When performed properly by a trained medical provider, with experience in threads, thread lifts present very few risks. While occasional side effects like irritation or asymmetry can occur, serious complications are rare.
How much treatment will I need?
Most patients only require one treatment session, although multiple areas may be treated in 2-3 sessions spaced 1 month apart.
Will results look natural?
Thread lifts provide more subtle, natural-looking results compared to surgical face lifts.
Does thread lift treatment hurt?
Thread lift procedures are relatively quick with minimal discomfort. Some pressure or tightness may be felt during the procedure, but a topical anesthetic can be used to numb the treatment area and reduce any pain. Over-the-counter pain medication can be taken to manage any pain or discomfort following the procedure.
How do I prepare for a thread lift procedure?

To prepare for a thread lift procedure, patients should avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin or NSAIDs for 1-2 weeks beforehand to minimize bruising and follow any presurgical instructions from their provider. Consult with your provider to address any specific concerns related to your treatment.
